Cytopathology is a subspecialty of Pathology. A pathologist is a doctor who has completed medical school and two to three years of residency training in Pathology. Pathologists diagnose diseases based on examination of body tissues, fluids and laboratory studies. A cytopathologist completes an additional one year of training in a cytopathology fellowship geared toward developing expertise in performing fine-needle- aspiration biopsies, molecular diagnostics and immunocytochemistry.
