A Sampling of Sports Relying on a Combination of Anaerobic and Aerobic Metabolism

Certain sports require a combination of aerobic and anaerobic metabolic processes. At times, these athletes work at maximal intensity (anaerobic), while at other times they work at submaximal intensity (aerobic). Imagine a soccer striker who is jogging to cover her area of the field, working to get an open position. At the moment the ball is passed to her, she sprints to the ball with maximal effort. This combination of anaerobic and aerobic effort has special nutrition considerations that are presented as examples in the following sports.
