Cardiovascular Requirements

To stimulate improvements in the cardiovascular system you must engage in aerobic exercise at least 3 times per week. You can increase the frequency overload by increasing the number of times per week. You can also increase the number of times per day that you exercise, although this is more commonly a way to reach the optimal duration of cardiovascular exercise when you cannot perform one continuous bout. For example, if you are just starting an exercise program, you can cycle 2 times per day, with each session lasting 5 to 10 minutes. You can also begin the frequency per week at the minimal 3 days, gradually increasing it to as much as 5 days per week.
