, Joseph G. Ouslander MD, Sandip Vasavada
Drugs and lifestyle changes are both effective in treating overactive bladder (OAB). Studies show the standard class of OAB medication, anticholinergics, also known as antimuscarinics, are effective in 70% to 80% of patients.
JOSEPH G. OUSLANDER, MD: Anticholinergic drugs for overactive bladder can be quite effective, especially in specific patients, but there are numerous, very large, well-designed, placebo-controlled studies that show that the anticholinergic drugs for overactive bladder are significantly better than placebo.
In all of those studies, people who were given placebo do get better. They have about a 30 percent improvement in their symptoms.
People who get one of the anticholinergic drugs for overactive bladder can have a 70 to 80 percent improvement in their symptoms.
