Health Tip: Why You May Need an MRI

And what it can detect

(HealthDay News) -- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses a strong magnetic field and computerized technology to compose detailed pictures of the organs and other soft tissue inside the body.

The Radiological Society of North America says an MRI can be used to help diagnose:

  • Tumors in the pelvic, abdominal or chest areas, reproductive organs, kidneys or urinary tract.
  • Some heart problems.
  • Enlarged or blocked blood vessels.
  • Abnormalities that affect the liver, gallbladder, and bile and pancreatic ducts.
  • The cause of pelvic pain, which could include endometriosis, fibroids or adenomyosis.
  • Abnormalities affecting the uterus.
  • Breast cancer.
