(HealthDay News) -- Your parents may have appreciated when you took a lot of food and left a clean plate, but experts say that's no way to maintain a healthy weight.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics offers these suggestions to help prevent overeating:

  • Use small plates and glasses.
  • Take small bites and chew your food slowly, taking time to savor it.
  • Don't indulge in more than one helping.
  • Before you dig into your main course, fill yourself up with a green, leafy salad or some vegetable soup.
