Diagnosing osteoarthritis (OA) for most people begins with a general practitioner. During the first visit, your doctor will take a medical history and conduct a physical exam. At the same time, the physician will ask questions to ascertain the location of the pain, what symptoms are occurring, and how the disease is affecting the activities of your day-to-day life. The doctor may check your reflexes with a rubber mallet. You might also be sent for an X-ray, MRI, or CT scan so that your doctor can see the extent of the OA.
