Living with Advancing Multiple Sclerosis: Exercise and Multiple Sclerosis

Jimmy: I like to play golf. I’ve been playing golf since I was 25. And I go on the treadmill twice a day. I try to walk as much as I possibly can outside in the nice weather.

Apatoff: We have a very holistic approach to our care of multiple sclerosis patients.

Apatoff: Are you doing any sort of exercise or physical therapy?

Jimmy: I do, I see a physical therapist and I try to exercise the best I can on my own.

Dr. Apatoff: Stretching is also very important, keeping up your flexibility.

Dr. Apatoff: We often will emphasize the importance of exercise in treating multiple sclerosis. We’ve been able to show that multiple sclerosis patients that do 30 minutes of aerobic activity two or three times a week are physically and psychologically better off. If they have issues with balance they can do aqua-therapy, swimming in a pool or water aerobics, elliptical, low recumbent bicycle.

Dr. Apatoff: There’s a number of modes of exercise that many patients can do even if they have some certain limitations with balance or walking. Or if they have some type of heat sensitivity, exercise in a nice cool swimming pool kind of dissipates all of that body heat that might otherwise be limiting to them.

Sheryl: Although heat is a problem for many people with MS, as soon as I heat up, my nerves have an even harder time sending signals back and forth. I think the best thing for me physically lately has been just exercising in water. I’m in my 50s and I was starting now to do miles of swimming. I feel better, I dropped 80 pounds, which on a five foot frame makes a huge difference in how I feel. Actual shape, I’m in better shape probably than I was in my 20s.

Dr. Apatoff: It is important not to focus just on medication, but all the other important influences of maintaining positive mental, emotional outlook, and keeping patients physically fit.
