For smokers, a morning routine typically includes having a cigarette. As you probably know, smoking wreaks havoc on your health, suppressing your immune system, accelerating aging, and hindering healthy blood flow. Smoking also deteriorates heart and lung health while diminishing the body’s antioxidant defenses.

If you have hypothyroidism, the negative effects of smoking are amplified: Smoking can take a toll on cholesterol, decreasing HDL or “good” cholesterol levels. While putting down the pack is easier said than done, know that quitting today may reverse many of the negative health effects, including those on thyroid health.

Avoiding secondhand smoke can be difficult too, but exposure to cigarettes can worsen thyroid health and place stress on the body.
