This is a list of some of the drugs that can be used to treat erectile dysfunction. As with any treatment, you should consult your doctor to help decide the best regimen for you.
Nitric Oxide Enhancers
These drugs counter erectile dysfunction by boosting the effect of nitric oxide, a chemical in the body that relaxes the muscles of the penis. This allows blood to flow into the penile tissues during sexual arousal, causing an erection.
Nitric oxide enhancers include:
- Viagra (Sildenafil)
- Cialis (Tadalafil)
- Levitra (Vardenafil)
Effective doses and time ranges vary, but these drugs are considered a successful treatment for ED.
Erectile dysfunction could be caused by low levels of testosterone in a man’s system. This means testosterone replacement therapy may be the answer.
Papaverine, alprostadil and phentolamine are additional drugs that can help a man get an erection, usually by helping improve blood flow. Unlike the nitric oxide enhancers, which are taken orally, these are usually injected directly into the penis. Alprostadil can also be inserted into the urethra as a suppository.
