When to See a Doctor for Back Pain

Moderate back pain usually ends on its own, but sometimes the pain has a deeper cause that should be treated medically. Here are some signs that it is time to see your doctor.

  • Numbness or tingling, particularly in your leg, foot, or groin area
  • Pain in your leg below your knee
  • Nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain
  • Fever, weakness, and sweating
  • Intense pain that prevents you from moving 
  • Pain showing no improvement in two or three weeks
  • Pain caused by a fall or traumatic injury
  • Loss of control over bowel movements or difficulty urinating
  • Unintentional weight loss
