Cells need glucose (sugar) and insulin to function properly. Glucose comes from the food you eat, and the pancreas produces insulin. If you are diagnosed with alcoholic ketoacidosis, your recovery will depend on a number of factors. Seeking prompt help when symptoms arise reduces your chances of developing severe complications. Complications may include encephalopathy (a brain disease that can cause memory loss, personality changes, and muscle twitching), psychosis, or coma.

Your prognosis will also be impacted by the severity of your alcohol use and the presence or absence of liver disease. Prolonged used of alcohol can cause scarring of the liver (cirrhosis). This condition is permanent and will impact your health. Cirrhosis of the liver can cause exhaustion, leg swelling, and nausea. If you have developed cirrhosis, your prognosis will not be as good.
