Acid Reflux Alternative Treatments

A number of complementary and alternative medicine treatments won’t treat GERD or reverse damage to the esophagus but some can help reduce acid reflux symptoms.

Herbs and Supplements

There are several herbs that may help relieve acid reflux symptoms but talk to your health-care provider before taking them or any dietary supplements to make sure they don’t interfere with any medications you’re currently taking.

  • Slippery elm, which has been used by Native Americans for centuries, contains mucilage, a substance that coats and soothes the mouth, throat, and stomach.
  • DGL-licorice standardized extract may help ease the pain of heartburn. It also acts as an expectorant, clearing mucus and phlegm from the respiratory tract. It can have side effects, however, so check with your doctor.
  • Chamomile Flowers soothe and encourage proper digestion.
  • Marshmallow Root is an herb that has been used for centuries to make heartburn less painful.
  • Probiotic supplements containing Lactobacillus acidophilus (one type of probiotic, or “friendly” bacteria) can help gain and then maintain the right balance in the digestive system between good and harmful bacteria.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids like fish oil can help decrease inflammation in the digestive tract.
  • Drinking six to eight glasses of water a day can ease symptoms.

Mind/Body Approaches

Stress and anxiety can make acid reflux symptoms worse, so techniques that lower stress may also reduce symptoms of acid reflux and GERD. Potentially beneficial relaxation techniques include yoga, Tai chi, meditation, progressive muscle relaxation and guided imagery.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body. In one small study, acupuncture helped people with heartburn that persisted despite medication. Ask your doctor whether acupuncture is a safe option for you.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy helps promote relaxation, which may reduce acid reflux flare-ups and symptoms. To help ease stress, anxiety, and acid reflux symptoms at night, try sleeping with an aromatic neck pillow filled with a soothing flower or herb like chamomile or lavender.
