April 20-26 and September 20-26 are the official TV turnoff Weeks for 2009! If you have never tried a TV turnoff week, I encourage you to try leaving the TV off for seven days - it is a wonderful vacation!
In December 2008 the National Institutes of Health released a study looking at the health-related impact of how much time people spend in front of a screen and the results were clear - for every hour of screen-time there are increases in obesity, drug & alcohol abuse, smoking, risky & early sexual activity, lower grades, and violence.
The
Center for SCREEN-TIME Awareness has resources and ideas for parents, teachers and community members to participate in the TV Turnoff Weeks for 2009!
