The Culture of Food
Whoa there is hope for our society yet! This month's American Journal of Public Health (April 2009, Volume 99, No.4) actually has a short article by Aleisha Kropf with two beautiful pictures. The included text is about how how food preparation affects the quality of everyday life: health, relationships, the environment, and even spirituality.
In contrast, she points out how Westernized food preparation, which tends to be processed, fast, and eaten alone, is actually undermining public health and well-being! She calls for more focus on the ritual of food preparation to create rituals to engage families in creating and sharing meals!
How nice to see this article and to know there are more people in the world who believe that people lose a lot when we limit the amount of "mothering" we do around food.
