Colleges across the country are sending out letters this month - acceptances and rejections - to millions of students whose life path will change with the coming of Spring. By May 1, 2010 most of them will have put down a deposit and accepted a spot in the class of 2014, although a few will embark on a gap year.
Please remember that these letters should only be opened by the seniors and the most important thing parents can provide is empathy. Getting rejected hurts and they know the rejection may not have been personal and they do not need us to make it worse. Try not to be disappointed and help your student make his or her decision based on finding the college that fits him or her the best.
Finally, remember that many people do not get exactly what they want, when they want it and many of us have become very successful adults even after failures, rejections, and more than one winding path. Good luck!
