Men Cause Menopause and Are Bad for Your Health
This is a story I’ve been trying to ignore. I first ran across it a few days ago and could only scoff. It’s so absurd and ridiculous, I felt certain it would blow on by pretty quickly. But, alas, I ran across it again on the front page of the menopause section at Science Daily.com this morning. So I guess I’ll say something about it.
I can assure you that no clear thinking woman is going to take this seriously – or clear thinking man for that matter, either. But, this is what happens when tenured college professors are under pressure to publish in order to maintain their academic standing.
I’ll try to contain my disdain, but I can’t promise. Here goes.
According to a new study published in the journal, PLOS Computational Biology, by a team of evolutionary biologists (who happen to be all men, by the way), menopause is “an unintended outcome of natural selection.”
According to the researchers, because men show a preference for selecting younger women as mates, the inability of older women to maintain fertility, and thus, to be able to reproduce (aka, menopause), is a Darwinian, evolutionary response.
“The forces of natural selection” says Dr. Rama Singh, PhD, and lead researcher, “are concerned only with the survival of the species through individual fitness, so they protect fertility in women while they are most likely to reproduce.”
Furthermore, says Dr. Singh, “The consequence of menopause is not only lost fertility for women, but an increased risk of illness and death that arises with hormonal changes that occur with menopause.”
Translation: Because men prefer sex with younger woman (news flash), it forces older women into menopause, increases our risk for illness, and we die off.
I told you it was absurd and ridiculous.
The researchers also point out that if the situation were reversed, that is, if women preferred younger men, then men would lose their fertility instead. I guess Dr. Singh et al, have never heard of Demi Moore or Ivana Trump.
I don’t know what annoys me more. The fact that these men are spewing this tripe, or that government dollars – your tax money and mine – are being funneled to universities in the form of “research grants” to fund such nonsense.
If you want to read the study for yourself – I promise, it’s real - here it is . But I’m cranky, it’s the first day of summer, and I’m going for a walk. I need the exercise, it will improve my mood, and I’ll be making a contribution to the “survival of the species” through my own physical fitness.
