No Child Left Behind? Homicide Rates Soar

Halloween just got really scary for me. I live in a relatively tranquil, quiet community. Two blocks from my house, a high school junior, a girl one year older than my daughter, was shot dead at 10 PM on Halloween. An immigrant from Mongolia with a 3.3 GPA, she was hanging out in the park where we all play and walk our dogs - in fact I had been walking mine there not two hours earlier. It was the first homicide in our town this year.

It was Asian on Asian crime for those of you curious about that kind of thing - a group of kids tried to rob her and her friends. Inko was killed. I told my daughter if she was ever in that situation, just give them her money, her cell phone, whatever they wanted and run like hell. While we obsess about kids understanding Algebra, they are getting killed in record numbers. Homicide is the number one cause of death of youth in our county, Alameda County. We have left kids behind, no matter how hard we try to get it right.

Our kids are fat, depressed, suicidal and getting killed.
