Superfood of the Week: Health Benefits of Acai
One of my favorite things about berries is the array of types available to nourish our bodies. There are blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries and one that is a bit off the beaten path: Acai berries!
Many health claims have gone overboard with making Acai into a food that can change your body with a quick fix. Though these claims may take it a bit far, that doesn’t mean that Acai doesn’t have incredible health benefits! Acai is extremely nourishing, which is why it is high on my list of tasty and beneficial super foods.
Acai is a reddish-purple berry that is high in antioxidants and great for the body. Like many other berries, Acai is very high in anthocyanins and flavonoids, both very powerful antioxidants that rid toxins that can damage our bodies. These antioxidants have been found to neutralize free radicals, which in turn may contribute to other health benefits, including:
- delaying the aging process
- reducing the risk of heart disease
- preventing the risk of certain cancers
- aiding in brain function
Acai is also high in essential nutrients, as well as fiber, which provides satiety and fullness, and is beneficial for optimal health.
Acai is sold either in juice or frozen form and can be found in your favorite grocery store. Acai is used in several ways, but is most frequently consumed dried, as juice, frozen puree, or in a smoothie.
