New Sweetener: All Natural, Zero Calories
I told you a few months back about some new sweeteners using the Stevia plant that were on the horizon. The best one I have seen is Truvia (pronounced True-Vee-Yah).
The reason I am gushing about Truvia is because it is for the first time a calorie-free, ALL NATURAL sweetener that tastes really good! Stevia has been on the market for a while, but it has a bitter taste. Truvia comes from the stevia plant, but it uses just rebiana which is the best tasting part in the leaves of the stevia plant.
In addition to the rebiana, it contains erythritol, which is a sugar alcohol. Normally I don't like sugar alcohols becuase they can have an unpleasant side effect of gas production in the GI tract. But erythritol is different becuase 90% of it is absorbed in the small intestine which results in very little if any gas production. Erythritol contributes 3 grams of carb, but it is not used as energy in the body, so those 3 grams of carb contribute no calories.
The Food and Drug Administation (FDA) has approved Truvia to be used as a tabletop sweetener as well as for use in products. Coca Cola has a relationship with the makers of Truvia to use it in many of their products. They announced this week that they will be rolling out Truvia in their Odwalla line as well as in Sprite. I think we will see it in many more Coca Cola products in the next few months.
Looks like sugar
Another reason I love this product is that it looks like sugar. It has large granuals similar to a packet of sugar instead of the fine powder of artificial sweeteners. For some reason I just like this better. One packet of Truvia provides the same sweetness as 2 teaspoons of sugar.
Truvia is great for anyone who is looking for adding sweetness to a food without adding calories. This is an all natural way to do it! It is perfect for diabetics or anyone trying to lose weight. You can use it in coffee, tea, fruit, cereal, or anything that you put sweeteners on now.

Truvia is in a white and green box. Just look in the same place in the grocery store as the other sweeteners can be found. It is $3.99 a box.
