Listen up all you beef lovers. Have I got some news for you that is going to make your heart jump for joy! A recent study published in the December issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition called the BOLD study or “Beef in an Optimal Lean Diet” showed that diets that consisting of a source of lean beef every day are as effective at lowering total and LDL (“lousy”) cholesterol as even the gold standard of heart healthy diets!
This study actually examined 36 healthy men and women with elevated LDL cholesterol levels. The researchers placed them on various diets varying in the amounts of lean beef and total cholesterol and measured the impact it had on their cholesterol levels. Study participants experienced a 10% decrease in LDL cholesterol while consuming 4-5 oz of lean beef daily! Today’s beef is very lean and delicious.
With heart disease as the number one killer of both men and women in the United States, controlling cholesterol levels seems to be the most effective way of decreasing heart disease. Red meat is usually the first thing that doctors and health professionals tell you to cut out for cholesterol management. Not any more! The take home message of this study is that lean beef can be kept in a heart healthy diet and actually help decrease cholesterol levels. Many people also probably did not know that there are 29 cuts of beef that actually fall into the lean beef category!
