What is this medicine?

COLESTIPOL (koe LES ti pole) is used to lower cholesterol in patients who are at risk of heart disease or stroke. This medicine is only for patients whose cholesterol level is not controlled by diet.

This medicine may be used for other purposes; ask your health care provider or pharmacist if you have questions.

What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

• constipation or bowel obstruction
• phenylketonuria
• an unusual or allergic reaction to colestipol, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
• pregnant or trying to get pregnant
• breast-feeding

How should I use this medicine?

This medicine is mixed into a liquid and taken by mouth. DO NOT take this medicine in the dry form. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Add the granules to 3 or more ounces of water, milk, fruit juice, pulpy fruit juice, fluid soup, or other liquid. Mix well and drink all the liquid (it will not dissolve). Rinse the glass with some additional liquid and swallow to make sure you take the full dose. If you use a carbonated drink, use a larger glass as the mixture will foam. Take your medicine at regular intervals. Do not take it more often than directed.

Talk to your pediatrician regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.
NOTE: This medicine is only for you. Do not share this medicine with others.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

What may interact with this medicine?

• diuretics
• gemfibrozil
• heart medicines such as digoxin or digitoxin
• penicillin
• phytonadione (vitamin k)
• propranolol
• tetracycline antibiotics
• vitamin A
• vitamin D

What should I watch for while using this medicine?

Visit your doctor or health care professional for regular checks on your progress. Your blood fats and other tests will be measured from time to time.

This medicine is only part of a total cholesterol-lowering program. Your health care professional or dietician can suggest a low-cholesterol and low-fat diet that will reduce your risk of getting heart and blood vessel disease. Avoid alcohol and smoking, and keep a proper exercise schedule.

To reduce the chance of getting constipated, drink plenty of water and increase the amount of fiber in your diet. Ask your doctor or health care professional for advice if you are constipated.

What side effects may I notice from receiving this medicine?

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

• allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue
• bloody or black, tarry stools
• breathing problems
• severe stomach pain with nausea and vomiting
• unusual bleeding or bruising
• weight loss

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your doctor or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):

• diarrhea
• dizziness
• headache
• indigestion
• nausea, vomiting
• stomach upset, belching, or bloating

Where should I keep my medicine?

Keep out of the reach of children.

Store at room temperature between 20 and 25 degrees C (68 and 77 degrees F). Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
