Portion of spine from patient with multiple myeloma. In this disease, malignant plasma cells spread through the bone marrow and hard outer portions of the body's large bones. As malignant plasma cells increase in the bone marrow, replacing normal marrow, they exert pressure on the bone. Bones become soft and may fracture; spinal bones may collapse.
