Angiogenesis. To keep up with the demand for blood vessels, the tumor releases factors called angiogenic factors. (An individual tumor cell is shown in the inset.) These factors initiate the growth of more blood vessels into the tumor. The rich supply of blood vessels also gives the tumor more opportunity to metastasize (spread) to distant sites by traveling through the blood. (Illustration by Argosy Publishing.)
