Should You Get a Bone Density Test?

You may envision a glass of milk when you think of bone health. But a new study from the University of London has found that beer might do skeletons a favor as well.
Researcher Jonathan Powell at King’s College London determined that beer, in its many varieties, has significant levels of silicon, a mineral that contributes to bone formation and the prevention of bone loss.
Although silicon levels vary among brands and varieties, a 12-ounce bottle contains approximately 7 milligrams, up to a quarter of a person’s daily requirement. Silicon is also found in whole grains (it may be that beer gets its silicon from the malted barley), some fruits and vegetables, and in unfiltered drinking water.
