Besides fending off vampires, heart disease and infection, garlic can add prostate cancer to its list of foes. In China, oncologists found that men who eat more than a heaping tablespoon of vegetables from the allium family (garlic, leeks, onions, chives) per day have half the risk of prostate cancer compared with men who eat less than a scant teaspoon.
But stick to the real thing. A separate study found that many garlic supplements come up too short on garlic's active ingredient to make a health difference. Instead, if you can tolerate the odor, chew uncooked garlic cloves for protection.
