What is this medicine?

RANOLAZINE (ra NOE la zeen) is a heart medicine. It is used to treat chronic chest pain (angina). This medicine must be taken regularly. It will not relieve an acute episode of chest pain.

What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
  • heart disease
  • irregular heartbeat
  • kidney disease
  • liver disease
  • low levels of potassium or magnesium in the blood
  • an unusual or allergic reaction to ranolazine, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant
  • breast- feeding

How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth with a glass of water. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Do not cut, crush, or chew this medicine. Take with or without food. Do not take this medication with grapefruit juice. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often then directed.

Talk to your pediatrician regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

What may interact with this medicine?

Do not take this medicine with any of the following medications:
  • cerivastatin
  • clarithromycin
  • conivaptan
  • cyclosporine
  • grapefruit or grapefruit juice
  • isoniazid (INH)
  • medicines for fungal infections like itraconazole, ketoconazole, voriconazole
  • medicines for HIV infection like delavirdine, indinavir, nelfinavir, ritonavir, saquinavir
  • medicines for irregular heart rhythm
  • medicines for seizures like carbamazepine, fosphenytoin, oxcarbazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin
  • nefazodone
  • nevirapine
  • quinacrine
  • rifabutin, rifampin, rifapentine
  • some antibiotics like chloramphenicol, clarithromycin, dalfopristin; quinupristin
  • some medicines used to treat cancer like imatinib, STI- 571, nilotinib
  • St John's wort

This medicine may also interact with the following medications:

  • alfuzosin
  • efavirenz
  • eplerenone
  • ergot alkaloids like dihydroergotamine, ergonovine, ergotamine, methylergonovine
  • medicines for depression like bupropion, citalopram, fluoxetine, paroxetine, sertraline
  • medicines for high cholesterol like atorvastatin, lovastatin, simvastatin
  • nicardipine
  • some medicines for mental problems like fluphenazine, perphenazine, risperidone, trifluoperazine
  • some medicines for stomach problems like octreotide, palonosetron, prochlorperazine
  • sirolimus
