What is this medicine?

FOSINOPRIL; HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE (foe SIN oh pril; hye droe klor oh THYE a zide) is a combination of a diuretic and an ACE inhibitor. It is used to treat high blood pressure.

What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
  • bone marrow disease
  • decreased urine
  • heart or blood vessel disease
  • if you are on a special diet, such as a low salt diet
  • immune system disease, like lupus
  • kidney disease
  • liver disease
  • low blood pressure
  • previous swelling of the tongue, face, or lips with difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, or tightening of the throat
  • recent heart attack or stroke
  • an unusual or allergic reaction to fosinopril, hydrochlorothiazide, sulfa drugs, other medicines, insect venom, foods, dyes, or preservatives
  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant
  • breast- feeding

How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth with a glass of water. Follow the directions on the prescription label. You can take it with or without food. If it upsets your stomach, take it with food. Take your medicine at regular intervals. Do not take it more often than directed. Do not stop taking except on your doctor's advice.

Talk to your pediatrician regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

What may interact with this medicine?

Do not take this medicine with any of the following medications:
  • diazoxide

This medicine may also interact with the following medications:

  • antacids
  • barbiturates like phenobarbital
  • blood pressure medicines
  • corticosteroids like prednisone
  • diabetic medications
  • diuretics, especially triamterene, spironolactone or amiloride
  • lithium
  • medicines for high cholesterol like cholestyramine or colestipol
  • methenamine
  • NSAIDs, medicines for pain and inflammation, like ibuprofen or naproxen
  • potassium supplements
  • prescription pain medicines
  • skeletal muscle relaxants like tubocurarine
