I'm very excited to announce that we're currently in the early stages of preparing for the 2010 DiabetesMine Design Challenge. Look, we've even updated the logo:
For those of you not familiar with it, this is an annual innovation competition to encourage creative new tools for improving life with diabetes. The contest is generously sponsored by the California HealthCare Foundation (CHCF); and supported by Medgadget.com, the Internet journal of emerging medical technologies, and the world-renowned design and innovation firm IDEO.
Last year was a huge success, if I do say so myself. The Grand Prize was $10,000, and we received over 150 amazingly creative entries from students, entrepreneurs, developers, patients, parents, caregivers and more. (See 2009's big winner here)
We're just now hammering out the exact parameters for this year's contest, but here's what I can tell you so far:
* There will be three Grand Prize winners, instead of just one. Each will receive a sizable sum of money, plus expert assistance towards commercialization of the design idea, as appropriate for each winner
* We'll also have prizes for a Kids Category and "Most Creative Idea" winner from the community
* Some new faces will join our Judges' Panel, including famous diabetes educator and author Gary Scheiner
* There will be Community Voting! This year YOU, Dear Readers, will be selecting the finalists for this competition
For the next 6 weeks, we'll be working on an updated promotional video and poster for the contest. We'll also be building out the 2010 landing page and contest entry info/forms, etc. here at the 'Mine.
The contest is slated to open for submissions on March 1, 2010.
Soooo... Do you have an idea for an innovative new diabetes device or web application? Here comes your chance to win some cash dollars, plus expert assistance in realizing your design concept — and potentially help transform life with diabetes for millions of people.
I'm telling you now to give you all a head start on getting your "dia-ventions" contest-ready.
Are your gears turning yet?? ;)
