My 9-year old asks the best questions. A few mornings ago, staring at the OmniPod on my shoulder, she hit me with this one:
"Mom, does it hurt more when it pulls out or when it gets pushed in?"
"Um... neither hurts that much, really. OK -- so when you pull it out, that's just a second, but when it's getting pushed into my skin, that kind of aches." (I didn't mention the most common cause here)
Spent the rest of my day catching my Pod in the mirror -- and on door jams and whatnot. Like I was somehow on a stake-out to catch potential pain.

The other day my almost-12-year-old came out with this:
"You'll never guess what I found in my bed, Mom!"
"Something of your sisters'?"
And then suddenly I knew, by the look on her face.
"A test strip?!"
"Oh my God, I'm sorry honey. It must've been in my pants pocket, and fell out when I was snuggling you."
"It's OK, I don't mind. It's just that..."
"Nobody else would even know what it is. Good thing I know what it is."
"True," I said. "That's what makes you special."
Followed by a very big hug.
Late one morning earlier this week I heard my husband's voice, muffled, calling me from a distance. I peered down the stairwell. Nothing there. So I sat back down in my office chair. But there it was again. I stood up and opened the window and looked down, and sure enough, there he was on the backyard lawn, grinning, holding up an unused Pod.
"WAS THIS INTENTIONAL?" he shouted, so I could hear him over the wind (it's been freakin' windy here). "IT'S STILL BEEPING...?"
"UH, YEAH," I shouted back. "IT GOT AN ERROR MESSAGE. I THREW IT OVERBOARD TO SHUT IT UP!"
We stared at each other from afar for a moment. And then I added:
"NOW GO THROW THAT THING AWAY. I CAN HEAR IT BEEPING FROM ALL THE WAY UP HERE!"
Life is weird anyway. But this is what happens when you add diabetes to the mix.
