Food for Health

From the time we were wedged into our high chairs we've been hearing the words "eat your fruits and vegetables" - and for good reason. Fruits and vegetables contain vitamins, minerals and fiber that may help protect you from many chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer.

For people struggling with high cholesterol making this a dietary priority can help reduce the amount of saturated fat you consume, one of the major contributors to dietary cholesterol. September's National Health Observances - Fruit and Vegetable Month and the National Cholesterol Education Month are good reminders of just how important it is to eat lots of produce as part of a well-balanced diet.

New! HealthBlogs from Healthline

Here's what experts from our new Health Matters HealthBlog Network have to say about eating for your health:

From The Diet Dish: Localmotion
Nutritionally speaking, eating locally grown in-season food is phenomenal for your health, for lots of reasons. First, freshly picked fully ripe fruits and veggies taste so darn good, you'll actually eat 'em (instead of letting them rot in the crisper). And, they're chock full of nutrients... more. Read The Diet Dish.

From The Family Fork: Being Fruit and Veggie Friendly: Tips to Get Your Kids to Eat 'Em
Fruits and veggies help our kids grow, perform better in school, and stay energetic so they can get out and be kids! ... "ok, just how do you expect me to get my kids to eat more?"... more. Read The Family Fork.

From Tech Medicine: Cholesterol and Statins
The thought is that by reducing your bad cholesterol, you won't have excess cholesterol to absorb into the lining of your arteries that form plaques ... providing a spot for your blood to clot and block flow to the tissues that need it. If this happens in heart arteries, it causes a heart attack... more. Read Tech Medicine.

Each of the authors above contributes to a new website feature we're proud to introduce: Health Matters - The HealthBlog Network From Healthline. Blogs are a new way to communicate timely information on topics important to you. Come visit the Health Matters Directory to see the relevant health and medical topics our medical experts are "talking" about. You can even respond to blogs and hear back from our experts on your pertinent questions.

The Health Nudge

High blood cholesterol is diagnosed by checking levels of cholesterol in your blood. To measure your cholesterol levels, your doctor will perform a test called a lipoprotein profile. Periodic screening for high blood cholesterol is recommended for all men ages 35-65 and women ages 45-65. Most people will need to not eat or drink anything 9 to 12 hours before taking the test. The lipoprotein profile will give information about your total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and triglycerides. This will be used to determine what lifestyle changes need to be made, or if medication is necessary. So learn your numbers!
