Healthline.com's Second Annual Munchie Madness Tip-off: The Healthiest Frozen Dinners

Amy's Tamale with Roasted Vegetables is a Slam Dunk Winner in the Munchie Madness Savory 16 Tournament During Frozen Food Month

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - March 23, 2011 - Healthline.com's Munchie Madness tournament is helping sports fans in living rooms across the nation who are looking for a healthy way to enjoy NCAA March Madness. As consumers find themselves glued to their couches anticipating the Final Four, they're turning to quick dinners, including frozen meals, to ensure they don't miss out on any of the hoops action. To celebrate Frozen Food Month, Healthline.com's food experts whipped out their TV trays and pitted 16 popular frozen dinners, The Savory 16, against each other in a tournament to find the healthiest and tastiest meals. In the Munchie Madness finals, Amy's Tamale with Roasted Vegetables triumphed over Healthy Choice Homestyle Salisbury Steak, racking up extra points for winning taste and innovative use of organic ingredients.

The Munchie Madness Savory 16 was selected by Healthline.com from national brand frozen food dinners in four all-American categories: Homestyle, Asian, South of the Border and Italian. Healthline.com's health and food experts included a consumer taste panel, the Healthline editorial team (which includes seasoned food writers and editors), and Healthline's in-house nutritional expert. They ranked the meals using carefully selected criteria that included nutritional content, such as calories, saturated fat and carbohydrates, along with other dietary needs, such as protein and fiber. Since healthy frozen dinners are only as good as they taste, flavor was a critical factor in the selection process and each judge kept track of flavor fouls.

"Frozen food gets a bad rap—people think it leads to packing on the pounds without offering any nutritional value and that it tastes terrible but there are choices out there that are both good for you and delicious," said Healthline.com executive producer Jerry Gulley. "Many people assume health compromises taste but our Final Four are all excellent options for a quick, easy, and affordable meal that actually tastes good."
