What You Need to Know

Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases (STD). It is a bacterial infection that is highly contagious and can be transmitted by any form of intimate contact. In women, the infection usually starts in the cervix or the throat. In men, gonorrhea usually starts in the urethra (the tube in the penis through which urine is passed).

Gonorrhea does not always occur with symptoms, but when they do occur, you understand why it got the name the drip. The Gonorrhea Learning Center's Test section gives you the low down about what diagnostic studies may be done to determine if you have this infection. If your tests for gonorrhea are positive, you will be prescribed treatment. The Gonorrhea Learning Center Drug section has a wealth of information about all of the antibiotics used to treat the infection. It is important to take the antibiotics as prescribed and to tell your sexual partners that you have gonorrhea so that they can seek treatment. Gonorrhea cases are on the rise again, so make sure you know about prevention of this disease.

Complications of untreated gonorrhea are serious business. Take our STD quiz in the Gonorrhea Learning Center's Tools section. STDs are on the rise in teen girls who may not know as much about using a condom as they pretend to. If you are a parent, speak frankly with your daughter about STD's and the use of condoms if she is sexually active.
