The cause of gallstones varies. Some stones form when there is too much cholesterol or bilirubin in the bile.

Test results, taken together with symptom history(see above) and a physical exam, are simple and relatively inexpensive for diagnosing the presence of gallstones. However, ultrasound is the method of choice for a definite diagnosis.

Gallstones are caused by an alteration in the chemical composition of bile. Bile is a digestive fluid that helps the body absorb fat.
