Treatment of acute otitis media (AOM). AAP, AAFP, CDC, and others recommend amoxicillin as drug of first choice for initial treatment of AOM, unless patient has severe illness (moderate to severe otalgia or fever ≥39°C) or the infection is suspected of being caused by β-lactamase-producing Haemophilus influenzae or Moraxella catarrhalis , in which case the fixed combination of amoxicillin and clavulanate is recommended for initial treatment. Those who fail to respond to amoxicillin should be retreated with amoxicillin and clavulanate.

Treatment of mild to moderate acute maxillary sinusitis caused by susceptible Streptococcus pneumoniae , Haemophilus influenzae (non-β-lactamase-producing strains only), or Moraxella catarrhalis (including β-lactamase-producing strains). Associated with lower bacteriologic eradication and clinical cure rates than some other anti-infectives (e.g., amoxicillin and clavulanate) in patient populations with high numbers of β-lactamase-producing bacteria. The possibility of reduced overall efficacy should be weighed carefully against local susceptibility patterns for common pathogens encountered in these infections.
