The place where cancer begins is the primary tumor. When it has spread, it is said to have metastasized. Carcinoma of unknown primary origin (CUP) is cancer that starts in an unknown location. It has then spread. Another name often used for CUP is unknown primary cancer, or UPC. These are the places CUP is most often found.

Certain factors can make you more likely to get cancer than another person. These are called risk factors. Because doctors do not know why, how, or even where cancer starts in carcinoma of unknown primary origin (CUP), it is hard to know risk factors for it.

If you have carcinoma of unknown primary origin (CUP), you may have any or all of these symptoms, depending on where in the body the cancer shows up.
