Anal cancer is cancer that starts in the anus. Different types of tumors can form in the anus. Some of these tumors are not cancerous and some are cancerous.

Some people use statistics to try to figure out their chances of getting cancer or of being cured. It is important to remember that this data shows what happens with large groups of people. Because no two people are alike, this information can't be used to know or predict what will happen to you.

There is no way to know for sure if you're going to get anal cancer. Certain factors can make you more likely to get this type of cancer than another person. These are called risk factors. Just because you have one or more risk factors does not mean you will get anal cancer. In fact, you can have all of the risk factors and still not get the disease. On the other hand, you may have no known risk factors and get anal cancer. Tell your doctor if you agree with any of the bolded statements.

Sometimes anal cancer does not cause any symptoms at all. Bleeding from the rectum is the most common symptom of anal cancer. These are other symptoms.

Rectal bleeding is when blood passes through your rectum and anus. It can occur with or without a bowel movement. Rectal bleeding may be a sign of a serious problem in the rectum, colon, or upper GI tract. Call your doctor right away if you have any rectal bleeding.
