Autologous blood donation is the process of donating one ' s own blood prior to an elective surgical or medical procedure to avoid or reduce the need for an allogeneic blood transfusion (from a volunteer blood donor). Purpose Blood transfusions are given to restore lost blood, to improve clotting time, and to improve the ability of the blood to deliver oxygen to the body ' s tissues.

Blood typing is a laboratory test done to determine a person ' s blood type. If the person needs a blood transfusion , another test called crossmatching is done after the blood is typed to find blood from a donor that the person ' s body will accept.
