Making knowledge matter: After sex ed and the talk with parents

Healthline
My name is Nancy Brown and I am an adolescent health specialist with two daughters ages 14 and 11. My goal at Healthline is to provide youth, teens, and young adults with medically accurate health information to questions that still exist after sexuality education and the "talk" with parents. I have worked with teens and health for 25 years – nothing will embarrass or surprise me – from fizzy wienies to sticky yellow vaginal discharge – if you can describe it – I can talk about it.

In my ideal world, all young people would have a close relationship with an adult they could ask questions about their health, but in reality, that is not the case. In this blog I will not trivialize your concerns and will do my best to answer your questions or point you somewhere to find the information you are looking for. I will not criticize your behavior, but will offer my advice when you ask for it – but like all advice, you choose what to accept and what to ignore.

Where shall we start?

Most people do not actually have any symptoms after they become infected with a sexually transmitted infection, which is why it is so important to get tested if you are sexually active, and to use condoms.

If you are worried, talk to your doctor. Good luck.

The morning after pill is used to prevent a pregnancy, usually after intercourse without a condom, or if the condom broke.

I have recently used the Plan B emergency contraceptive and I took the first pill but forgot to take the second one. Does this mean that it won't work?

It would be best for you to call the doctor that prescribed the medication, or see planned parenthood for a pregnancy test. Good luck!

Time to have this diagnosed by a health care practitioner and wearing a tampon every day is not a good idea. Please make an appointment to talk about it with your doctor and have an exam. Good luck!

what's wrong with wearing a tampon everyday?

Well, if you are not having a period, using a tampon pretty much dries out the inside of your vagina, which keeps itself healthy and clean with different bacteria and liquids.

Additionally, if left in more than 10 hours, a tampon can be associated with Toxic Shock Syndrome. This would be a great thing to discuss with your doctor.

It may be unrelated, but you might want to try drinking lots of water, and some people cranberry juice, and if it does not get better (like in a day), or you get a fever, please go see a doctor. You may have a urinary tract infection.
