Reader Comments on “Freedom From Smoking”

Jonathan Foulds, MA, MAppSci, PhD
I’m afraid I just found out there has been another glitch affecting readers’ comments on my blog. I just received a copy of a bunch (over 50) of readers’ comments, and when I checked most had not been posted to the site as they should have. The site is working to fix this, but there appears to be quite a backlog. So in order to makes sure readers’ comments get posted (sooner rather than later) I’m posting some of them here just now, along with any additional comments I may have (CAPS):

James Rowan has left a new comment on your post "Chantix side effects":
This medication has promise in helping smokers, however it is still a dangerous substance. There is still a 50/50 chance that patients will experience severe psychotic side effects. That means that patients might be ok or they might want to claw their faces off, literally. I feel that it is appropriate to have more testing/trials with this drug. Good luck to all.

JF COMMENT: IT IS CLEAR THAT FAR LESS THAN 50% OF PATIENTS USING CHANTIX EXPERIENCE “PSYCHOTIC SIDE EFFECT”. THE REPORTS IVE SEEN SUGGEST IT MAY BE CLOSER TO ONE PER THOUSAND (DEPENDING ON ONES DEFINITION) AND THERE IS A DOUBT ABOUT WHETHER THOSE ARE ACTUALLY CAUSED BY CHANTIX AT ALL.

In Re: smokeless tobacco:
Jonathan because of your presentations and blogs, I have become more discerning in regards to smokeless tobacco and I want to be very careful not to tell lies about it like the tobacco companies have told lies about cigs and nicotine. I want to tell people the truth as it appears that there is going to come a day when smokeless products will be much less harmful than antitobacco persons(like myself) have been saying. So, I was trying to find out what tobacco product Rick Bender was using, for example, was it the skoal and copengagen with more carcinogens and how has that changed now. Please see this link... it lists many chemicals in the smokeless tobacco.. I think snus does not have all this... I recall the TSNAs and your chart on the amount per type, but not these other chemicals and really do not think it is TRUE that there are thousands of chemicals in any of the smokeless... please tell us the TRUTH of 2009... thank you.

JF COMMENT: THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT ALL TOBACCO CONTAINS SOME CARCINOGENS, AND THAT SOME TYPES CONTAIN VERY DIFFERENT AMOUNTS THAN OTHERS. IT ALSO APPEARS THAT THE OVERALL AVERAGE LEVEL OF CERTAIN CARCINOGENS IN SMOKELESS TOBACCO HAS DECREASED OVER TIME. THE EPIDEMIOLOGICAL DATA SUGGEST THAT THE HARMFULNESS (E.G. ORAL CONCER RISK) IS RELATED TO THE CONCENTRATION OF THESE CARCINOGENS IN THE PRODUCT, AND THAT TYPES OF SMOKELESS TOBACCO THAT ARE KNOWN TO BE RELATIVELY LOW IN TOXIN CONCENTRTATIONS ARE THEREFORE LESS LIKELY TO CAUSE SERIOUS HARMS. BUT MOST SMOKELESS TOBACCO IN THE USA CONTAINS NEEDLESSLY HIGH LEVELS OF TOXINS.

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Chantix and depression on stopping smoking.":
I have been taking Chantix for about a month and a half. Mood has been a whole lot worse. Terrible in fact-depression at its worst. I am going to stop the Chantix for now. I also have been having very very vivid dreams.

JF COMMENT: VERY HARD TO INTERPRET THIS, PARTICULARLY WITH NO INFO ON SMOKING, BUT IN THIS SITUATION ALWAYS BEST TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR.

Nuria has left a new comment on your post "Do menthol smokers inhale more nicotine and toxins...":
Hi Dr.!! In Mexico they sell an e-cigarette named "cigatronik". They sell cartridges with and without nicotine... as far as I know, no one has corroborated that info. Best regards!!

I know from a personal about the horrible results from smoking.
My last husband , married from 1988-2006 wehrn he passed away. His family and I all went thru a living hell with the effects of his smoking. He quit after it was beyound help and his quality of life was horrible. As a person thart saw this happen to him made me alsmost sick myself trying to help and take care of a person in that shape. It was devasting to his childre and me also. I hope to never have to go thru that again with ofr for anyone. That is how bad it was.
