Camel Snus Smokeless Tobacco - What is it?
Some recent reports on the health effects of snus in Sweden can be found via the following links: http://sph.umdnj.edu/news/index.cfm?newsID=168
http://www.rcplondon.ac.uk/pubs/brochure.aspx?e=234
The main characteristics of Swedish snus are that (a) it is an oral tobacco product that has relatively low levels of various toxins, as compared with traditional US smokeless products and (b) it delivers moderately high levels of nicotine to the user.
A recent study by researchers at University of Minnesotta found that Camel snus had levels of carcinogenic tobacco-specific nitrosamines that were much lower than for traditional smokeless products (I.e less than 2 micrograms per gram for Camel Snus, versus 8 for Copenhagen and 12 for Kodiak). Levels of other carcinogens were also lower in Camel and other snus products than other tradional smokeless products. For example, while the new snus products had levels of benzo(a)pyrene of around 3 micrograms/gram, tradional smokeless tobacco products all had levels above 30, and Kodiak Wintergreen had a level of 57.
Camel snus is marketed in metal tins kept refrigerated in stores. Each tin contains 15 small sachets which look a bit like small tea bags, each containing flavored tobacco. When placed under the top lip for about 30 minutes the snus releases nicotine which is absorbed into the blood stream. It is unclear whether the current snus products being marketed in the US deliver enough nicotine to satisfy cravings for a cigarette and potentially help smokers quit. The evidence from Sweden is clear that a large number of Swedish men have successfully quit smoking by switching to snus.
It remains to be seen how the product will be received in the United States. If you want to give up smoking and may need some pharmacological support, it makes much more sense to use FDA approved medicines than to use unproven products that contain carcinogens (albeit in small quantities). However, if you want to continue to enjoy tobacco but want to use a less harmful product, then switching from cigarettes to snus makes sense - but only if accompanied by cessation of smoking.
You can find out more about snus and other potentially less harmful tobacco products at: http://tobaccoproducts.org/index.php/Camel_Snus
I’d be interested to hear from anyone who has tried any of these new types of tobacco product.

I started out smoking about 15 years ago. then gradually started to dip "grizzly". I often found myself spitting out a dip just to go and light up a smoke, or visa-versa. i bought my first can of camel snus 1 week ago and i have no problems not smoking. the snus delivers enough nicotene to keep my cravings down, and I also find myself using less pouches then i would pinch a dip. i think its because the flavor of the snus lasts so long that i dont realize when the nicotene stops, so i just keep enjoying the flavor like a piece of candy was in my mouth. hope this helps you, if it even makes sence..

Using smokeless tobacco does not help smokers quit. At least, not in the United States, according to research from UC San Diego.
Earlier research in Sweden has suggested otherwise. But, a study just released by the University of California, San Diego and Sweden’s Karolinska Institutet showed that there are important differences between the United States and Sweden about how people use—and quit—tobacco. The study is published in Tobacco Control.
In Sweden, many smokers quit smoking by switching to smokeless tobacco. But researchers didn’t find a similar effect among U.S. smokers. This is important because there has been a vigorous debate in the international public health community about whether tobacco control programs should stop advocating complete tobacco cessation and start promoting smokeless tobacco as a less-harmful alternative to smoking.
Over a one-year period, the UC San Diego study tracked quit rates, and the rates of switching from one form of tobacco to another, of more than 15,000 adult participants. It showed that:
• Among U.S. men, less than 1 percent of current smokers switched to smokeless tobacco during the 12 month study.
• Only 1.7 percent of former smokers turned to smokeless tobacco.
• Men’s quit rate for smokeless tobacco was three times higher than for cigarettes.
The Swedish data showed just the opposite: Swede smokers are more likely to switch to smokeless tobacco. Smokeless tobacco users in Sweden are less likely to quit.
It looks like the Swedish experience with smokeless tobacco and quitting smoking is unique to Sweden.

Nicotine stimulates the release of the hormone epinephrine, which further stimulates the nervous system and is responsible for part of the "kick" from nicotine.Nicotine promotes the release of the hormone beta-endorphin, which inhibits pain.
In addition to nicotine, cigarette smoke is primarily composed of a dozen gases (mainly carbon monoxide) and tar. The tar in a cigarette, which varies from about 15 mg for a regular cigarette to 7 mg in a low-tar cigarette, exposed the user to an increased risk of lung cancer, emphysema, and bronchial disorders.

I am amazed. I have smoked for 7 years, and failed many times to quit, I got a free promotional can of Snus with my last Cigarette purchase, and Have not had a cigarette in 4 days after finishing the pack. I agree with the first poster, It may only deliver nicotine for 30 mins, but the flavor lasts longer so I find myself consuming only about 4-5 a day. Thats 5 bucks every three days where I live, compared to 12 bucks smoking.

I agree with the author of the last post, snus has helped me quit smoking, which is an incredible accomplishment due to everything I tried to stop. People who have never smoke and who blame smokers for their own problems really need to chill. Most smokers started due to a bad day/week/event, or just out of curiosity. Snus has helped me significantly, and although I know it still isn't getting rid of the nicotine completely it does improve over all quality of life. I can run, exercise and perform everyday tasks with it and it eliminates the weezing and lack of breath associated with smoking. I'm very curious to see how the American public takes to Snus, as well as its' future.

i've been a pack a day smoker for about 15 years. i've been using both swedish snus and camel snus for about 2 weeks now. although i haven't quit smoking entirely, i have gone days without cigarettes, and have gone through only about 3 packs in the 2 weeks. the most difficult things are the morning smoke, the after meal smoke, and the commute smokes. those require work.

I smoked for over 20 years and switched to primarily vanilla skoal for about another 7 or so. I bought Camel Snus on an impulse buy. I'm sure glad I did. The flavor lasts longer and not having to spit is a godsend. At first I was disappointed at the size of the Snus but after trying once I saw how powerful the taste was and got over it. After being impressed with it I will start buying Swedish or Camel Snus online.

Deirdre Dingman asked why snus is banned in the European Union. This ban took place in the early 90s prior to Sweden joining the EU. At that point smokeless was not used much in any EU country and there was a felt wiser to stop it getting started. When Sweden joined the EU they were allowed an exception. Now Sweden has amongst the lowest male smoking, and lung cancer rates in the EU. A paper found at this link explains the situation and recommends a policy change in more detail:

I just bought some snus because they were out of copenhagen pouches, the flavor is sweet, so I am not sure I like it. I'm sure it is less harmful, but only time will tell if I can handle the sweetness. Does it have sugar? Beer tastes bad with it.

I am 22 years old and have been a pack a day smoker for about 2 years. Picked up a can of snus because it was camel brand (I smoked camels) and figured it was worth a shot to see if I simply enjoyed it. After using it in conjuction with cigarettes for a few days I found myself enjoying the snus much more than the cig, and yesterday without realizing it went my entire work day without a smoke break.
Although its not a perfect replacement I can most definatly say that I'm sold. Its potent enough to satify your cravings, but light enough you can swallow the residue, its amazing really.
tastes great, lasts a long time, and insidently is safer. Cant wait to try some real sweedish snus.

in reference to the ban mentioned in the EU on snus and other smokeless products, from what i read, while most of the EU are banned, norway and sweden were grandfathered in due to their high amount of use and production. the ban seemed to take place after US based US Smokeless Tobacco - marketed under Skoal and Copenhagen - tried to move into the EU market. Due to the significantly higher amount of carcinogens introduced by such US based brands, they banned all smokeless tobacco.
I myself have tried Camel Snus and thoroughly enjoy it. I only smoke on occasion (i always have been just a social type smoker) and i have tried other US Smokeless products and cant stand them. Camel did a supurb job luring me in and i am happy to find a product i can use that doesnt have me feeling (or even concerned about) serious health side effects.

I'm a regular smoker; I tried the Camel Snus product a few minutes ago. I don't like it as much as smoking.. it gave me hiccups! I might use it occasionally, though, since there are promotional prices right now, and it might be suitable for use in non-smoking environments, if I'm sneaky. It should be noted that I'm more afraid of mouth cancer than lung cancer--I don't know why.

I have been using Swedish snus for quite a while now and it helped me to stop my 20 year long habit of smoking. I haven't had a cigarette since I started with snus. I was happy to see Camel Snus. I tried it and found it to be horrible compared to Swedish snus. Just like the American Tobacco companies to ruin a perfectly great product.

I have been a smoker for 13 years, started when I was 13. Some days I will smoke 1-1.5 packs and some days just 2-4 smokes; it depends on what I am doing and who I am around. However, I dip half a can a day for the last few years.
Three days ago I saw an add for snus and thought I would try it. I am sure glad I did. Today I was on a 1.5 hour drive. When I am driving I smoke a lot. But today while driving, instead of lighting up a Camel non-filter or Lucky Strike(my brands of choice)I used two pouches of snus at the same time and they lasted me the entire 1.5 hours. I have almost no desire to smoke anymore except for socially or when I am working in the yard or washing my cars.
I made a deal with myself years ago that I would not smoke after I got married. So now I know I can keep my promise to myself in a few months when my fiance finishes law school and we get married.
Every smoker or smokeless tobacco user owes it to themselves to try a few can of snus. It could just end up saving your life and its a lot cheaper too.

I use the camel snus and it's great. I don't stink like cigerettes and no spitting required. I only smoke a half a pack a day and this has compensated nicely. Not having to spit is great because I don't have to take it out to eat or drink. No one even notices I have it in, so I can do it anywhere!

my experience with snus has been a good one thus far. I have tried cold turkey several times...nope. I tried the patch...nope again. I have tried the gum and found it lost its effectiveness within a week. I continued smoking while using the gum. When i have a pouch of snus under my upper lip i forget about the cigarettes. i have been smoking for thirty years. i still have up to 5 cigarettes a day, but it is only first thing in the morning and maybe with a beer or two at night. in between i use up to 10 pouches. The savings alone is great. I do still weeze. when i tried to quit the cigs all together i had a headache for a solid week. but it is still so much better than where i was. my breathing has quite less of a wheeze to it. maybe one day i will quit the cigs all together, but am happy with the simple improvement for now.

I am a 34-year-old female who has smoked for 21 years...bout a pack a day. I tried to quit using the nicotine gum and lozenges, but everytime I would drink alcohol, it just wasn't enough. I am a bartender, so I am around alcohol and smoke all the time. I knew it would be hard to stop considering my job, but I tried anyway. I bought Camel Snus because I heard it wasn't noticeable and you didn't have to spit.(I have to be cute to get tips, you know...spitting with a big dip in your mouth isn't very sexy!) I use it twice a day...That's all I need.(unless it's Friday night and I'm drinking beer, then I'll use more) I haven't smoked for three weeks. I think it's great, and I tell people about it all the time. I plan to stop using it also, but for now, I'm just working on quitting the habit of lighting up. I'll deal with the nicotine addiction after I've beaten the habit. It's working great for me, and I feel like a million bucks.

I was a smoker some 23 years ago or so and to quit smoking, I started dipping. It did result in my quitting smoking but created a very powerful dipping addiction to Skoal mint dip. I tried Snus for the first time this week. I greatly enjoy my Skoal and couldn't imagine that something called Snus would give my dip a run for its money....but it has happened. I bought Snus frost and found it to be better than I hoped. I am now given Snus a two day run and found that I didn't even want my regular Skoal dip. I have read the articles about it being "healthier" than regular smokeless tobacco and that point is weighing heavy in my decision to switch to it full time. My only big concern with the switch is Snus will not take off in the US and become hard to find or unavailable in really small towns like where I live. The flavor is powerful and very good...the nicotine level works great for me.

I use snus roughly once a day. Previously, I had used dip or other smokeless tobacco products. There is a difference between snus and dip primarily in the way that they are made. It is my understanding that snus is steam-cured, which produces significantly fewer carcinogens than dip (which is fire-cured). Additionally, it is less harsh on your mouth and more pleasant to use.
I have used camel snus, but it is far too sweet for me. I worry about the amount of sugar as far as cavities go.. Anyway, if you don't like the overwhelming sweetness of camel snus, I'd recommend switching to the significantly lighter flavoured swedish snus brands. In my opinion, they have a much nicer, more refined flavor and do not interfere with the beverages you may be drinking.

The Camel 'Snus' sold here in the US is very different from Snus sold in Sweden. For starters it tends to be considerably stronger, thus making it easier for smokers to transition to Snus. You also get much more for you money, it is not sweet like candy, and lasts longer. Comparing Snus found here and those sold back in Sweden is like comparing smoking a cheap cigarette to a fine Cuban cigar. I have personally used Swedish Snus to quit smoking, but probably wouldn't have been able to do so with the over-priced, low-nicotine, candied rubish that passes for snus here. There are many places that will ship true Swedish Snus to the US and even after International shipping it's still cheaper than cigarettes. I highly reommend current smokers or dippers to try the switch to good (Swedish) Snus.

Before switching to Swedish snus I was a long time two pack a day smoker (21 years). The problem with snus being produced and marketed by American tobacco companies such as Phillip Moris and R.J Reynolds is that the contain tiny amounts of nicotine and to be completly honest are just terrible. One would almost think that they almost want you to continue to smoke...I know, shocking that big tobacco could deceptivly market something.
If you are a smoker that is looking to quit via a reduced harm alternative, do yourself a favor and look into genuine Swedish snus rather than Camel or Marlboro snus. Check around the web. There are two companies that have US based warehouses that stock a wide selection of snus from Sweden.

I was a pack a day smoker for 18 years... Camel snus introduced me to the real swedish snus and i've been smoke free for about two weeks now and have no cravings to go back to.
I would like to clear up a couple of misconceptions. This is from widely available long term research done in Sweden.
1. The likely hood of getting cancer (mouth, lung, pancreatic, gastrointestinal, all kinds) is between 100 and 1000 times greater with cigarrets than snus. Yes, cigarret smoke causes mouth cancer.
2. Camel snus is very very sweet and does not resemble swedish snus in taste or nicotine strength at all. Swedish snus is salty, and has a wide array of subtle flavors.
3. cigarrets have a larger impact on your mouth by far than snus. Snus does not stain your teeth as much as cigs do and has caused me no mucosal irritation at all.
4. The US has not embraced dip the way Sweden has embraced snus. This is due to the fact that the similarities between "dip" and snus end at both being an oral form of tobacco. Snus does not irritate, does not require spitting, has a stronger nicotine delivery and taste much better. And because most Americans belive that any oral tobacco has a very high chance of causing mouth cancer.

I was a very heavy smoker for over 30 years (3-4 packs a day). I had tried to quit using all the gum, patches, acupuncture, hypnotism, with no success About 18 months ago I ordered a trial pack of swedish snus on the web - It arrived -I tried it and have not had a cigarette since that day.
Initially I was using about 5 -8 pouches per day but found that as time went by I used less and less and would often leave one pouch in my mouth for 6 or 7 hours - eventually I started taking the pouch out at night and re-using it for the whole of the next day- of course there was no nicotine or flavor left in it and so no real reason to even use it but I was like a kid with their favorite little blanket or something.
About 2 months ago I lost my last pack of snus (left it in a bar by mistake)and since then have been free of both cigs and snus.
Snus is a total winner in my opinion and I can't understand why the antismoking lobby does not endorse it 100 %.

I saw the adds for Camel snus, did a little research and tried a can. The first morning was a bit rough it takes a few minutes for the nic to kick in, but I haven't smoke since 2 weeks now. Got on line and ordered some from Sweden, no where near as sweet and some have higher nic content. I prefer Swedish type myself which is not sweetened, also leaves a less slimy feel to your mouth than the Camel type. And, like I said 2 weeks and no desire of returning to the smokes!

I smoked for about 10 years and tried out a free sample pack from getsnus. I haven't smoked since. This is the longest period for me to not smoke ever. I have seen drastic benefits to switching and feel more optimistic about positive long term health.
Here are a few benefits I have embraced:
A) It's going on 4 months now and I haven't had the slightest urge to smoke.
B)I can actually go up my 3 flights of stairs without gasping for air.
C)I can increase my workout from 30 - 40 minutes when I smoked to 1 1/2 hours currently and increasing.
D)I haven't had any bronchitis episodes like I normally do in July and Dec (well see this winter how well I hold).
E)Its also really cheap to just buy a 10 pack of snus and last a few weeks to a few months then spend money on a 5 pack of cigs and go through them in a matter of days
F)Now a days I go out to restaurants and smell the foul cigarette smoke and it makes me glad we are outlawing smoking in public places like restaurants in Texas.
I did a lot of research as to why Swedish snus is so much better than American. The toxin levels for carcinogenic chemicals is virtually non existent in the Swedish version of snus and doesn't have that sickly candy taste either.
I think if America would introduce it as an alternative to smoking then it would be a huge benefit on how many people quit and could help the health crisis at hand. I wish we would adopt the Swedish method and promote this version more as it is relatively new for us here and we use the American products.
Also I love how you can regulate the amount of nicotine you can deliver to yourself. For light smokers like me a mini thunder frosted for morning usage and 2 - 3 mini general wintergreen for the day does the trick. For heavy users I would suggest Roda lacket claq or frosted thunder for daily usage.

I quit a two-pack a day smoking habit four years ago after trying Swedish snus. I had smoked for over 35 years. I stopped smoking immediately and never went back. I use maybe three tins of portion snus each week. I hope that our federal, state, and local government representatives have the wisdom to acknowledge snus as an excellent form of harm reduction, and that the people who make their livings fighting "Big Tobacco" have the moral fortitude to admit that some forms of tobacco are relatively safe.

I live in hope that one day the ban on sales here is lifted (will save me a furtune in shipping costa and taxes). Some of my English friends have used snus as an aid to quit smoking!!! If anyone is in the know if the ban for England is on the cards to be lifted or something along those lines, I would be greatfull to be given a heads up :)

I smoked a pack a day for 36 years. 10 years ago, I stopped with the aid of Wellbutrin and the patch. Six years after that, I discovered snus, and I now use them daily. The Swedish ones are not sweet, and they are much cheaper than the American Camels. I tried the American Camels last month, and they are sickly sweet and didn't seem to have much nicotine. Not my cup of tea.
Snus are a great, socially acceptable alternative to smoking, and I hope our government doesn't impede our rights to buy them overseas. I understand the the EU banned them because of the tobacco interests in Europe. They felt very threatened, as so many Swedes have successfully quit smoking and replaced that with snu use.

I have always been an all or nothing smoker... If I had a cigarette today, I would immediately be back at a pack-a-day habit. It's happened 3 times in my life, each with at least 3 years of tobacco free living in between. At one point it had been 5 years since my last cigarette when, in a moment of weakness, I had a cig and immediately went back to a pack a day.
Enter Camel Snus - now, when I know I'll be in a "risky" environment, like a big music festival or something, I bring some Snus and it solves the craving. I can have one today and not have another for 6 months, so I don't really get into any habit with it, but it certainly helps keep me from smoking anymore.

Camel snus is just plain weak. I don't know how much nicotine is in there or what the pH of the product is, but I'm pretty sure neither one is high enough. I'm amazed to read that some people seem to feel it's an adequate replacement for smoking.
Real swedish snus on the other hand packs a real strong hit of nicotine. If you're interested in trying snus, especially as an alternate vehicle for taking nicotine, I highly recommend seeking out the Swedish stuff.

I'm a 29 year old male and smoked for 11 years, about a pack a day for the first 8 or so and then became a serious "handroller" first because of the savings and then because of the higher nicotine "bang". One day I bought a box of Nicorette instead of a tin of Drum and it worked well for 2 or 3 weeks and then it just wasn't "doing it" anymore. I was afraid I was going to start smoking again, then one day I saw the Camel Snus display and picked up a pack. They definitely did the trick! They got me through the hard times and I hardly use them any more, only when I remember I have them or I'll bring one or two along if I know I'll need one. I can hardly believe how well they have worked, I have been smoke free for 9 weeks now and I'll never smoke again!

Great way to quit. I smoked for twelve years. This past year I started dipping Kodiak pouches for five months, then switched to Snus for three months when they had trial size packs for less than two dollars. Im now free from nicotine. Thanks Snus!

nicorette gum is far too expensive. i haven't smoked in 5 days thanks to snus...my 7th time "quitting" in 7 years...they say it takes 7 times....this time i have hope. the snus helped the gradual decline in nicotine levels.

After using Snus for a few weeks I don't even like the taste of cigarettes anymore.
The Government is doing the American people a great disservice by requiring the label "Not a safe alternative to cigarettes" that's like saying that sober driving is not a safe alternative to drunk driving

***WARNING***
I was a smoker for several years, then began using Camel Snus about 3 months ago. It helped with cigarette cravings; however, just over 3 weeks ago, I began to notice blood in my stool. It was bright red at first and not excessive. Then it gradually became worse over the next few days. I began having severe abdominal pain and blot clots began to appear in my stool...then dark tar-like blood. Now I am on the toilet every 20 minutes. I have been to the doctor several times, and it's possible I have developed several stomach and intestinal ulcers - which are now infected and bleeding. Treatment is a long and painful process.
I don't know if this has been caused by the Snus, but it sure does seem like it adds up.

I know it's not a safe alternative to smoking but I tried it today and plan on using it instead of smoking to save my lungs any further damage and if I can do that, then I'll be happy and hopefully put nicotine behind me for good

i also quit smoking using SWEDISH snus. Don't trust usa tobacco. use swedish snus. to the person who said snus is illegal in EU and asked "whats your take on that?". I ask you, the USA government has kept cigarettes legal for decades, even giving cigarettes to our solders in war. it has collected massive amounts of taxes off cigarettes while saying those same cigarettes are bad. they have managed to keep people hooked, breed new younger smokers to replace the dead ones. they have lied to us and said smokeless is as bad as cigarettes.
so whats your take on that?

I first tried it out when I had a 14 hour plane ride to japan. I smoked about a pack to a pack and a half a day. I was suprised it settled my nicotine cravings and not having to spit it great and my wife will still kiss me! unlike with dip. The only time I smoke now is when I drink a lot and in the morning, I love my morning cigarret and coffee but one a day is a lot better than a pack and a half a day

I smoked for over 20 years and did not have any success quitting until I found Swedish snus. Now I have been smoke free for over 5 weeks and intend to stay that way. Thanks for an article that looks at the fact and not just a carry over of the anti tobacco sentiment some people seem to harbor. If you look at the snus forums, you will see thousands if not tens of thousands of people who switched from smokes to snus. If you are a smoker and want to try this, please use Swedish snus as the American versions are not as good in my opinion.

I'm 35 years old, male, have been smoking about a pack a day of Camel Lights since I was 15- I got a free promo snus coupon, and I hit wiki- did my research and decided to try. I have had dificulty quitting over the years, and the cost to my children, and my work productivity has been a real hit. I got a can of Camel Frost and my last pack of lights lasted 4 days. I never baught another. I heard that the quality of the American Snus was blah, so after reading reviews I baught General Portion by Swedish Match and was pleased. My next order is the 01-02 collection for the portion shape, but overall I'm pleased. I keep a can of Frost around for my girlfriend, as the Snus I use the most at work is not kisser-friendly. I highly recommend it as a lesser of evils.

I work with non smokers who claim to be allergic to 3rd hand smoke. I got some free Camel snus at an event and have used it on workdays instead of 2 smoke breaks. Been doing it for about 3 weeks. My co-workers think I've quit smoking. I like the taste, and even though I still smoke a few on the weekends, I feel like I can breath a little better. Cigarettes were killing me and nicotine gum or patches didn't work for me.
