    Andrea,

My potassium level was 2.9. Critical level. I was rushed to the hospital with sudden inability to breath followed by shortness of breath and labored breathing. Tingling/numness in my legs, arms and upper front teeth. I had just had gallbladder surgery 2 days prior to this incident. I felt a pop in the center of my chest and then the inability to breath. The emergency room doctor ran lots of test. Only found my potassium level to be critically low at 2.9. They gave me to IV bags of Potassium and sent me home. Does Low Potassium levels cause these type of symptoms/problems?

    HI Nena.

I am so sorry to hear about your terrible experience. I referred your question to a clinical dietitian and this is what she had to say in regards to your issue:

"Hypokalemia (that's low blood potassium levels) tends to cause neuromuscular decompensation which may be what she experienced (ask Doc about this). Her most likely cause may be GI (gastro0intestinal) losses from her surgery; unless she is on diuretics (don't take this as a diagnosis, but ask your doctor if this could have something to do your symptoms). The "pop" she felt is a little concerning to me especially since it happened so close to her surgery. Did she discuss with her doctor the possibility of a suture puncturing post surgery? If the propblem persists, she should definitely contact her surgeon and she may need to take a potassium supplement."

I hope this helps you with some questions to ask your doctor that may help clear up what you've been experiencing.

Thank you for writing and I am sending get well vibes your way.

    Andrea
