What Can You Get For 100 Calories???

Tara Gidus, MS, RD, CSSD, LD/N
Those 100 calorie snack packs are everywhere! The perception is that "it is only 100 calories." The danger is that even 100 calories extra each day can cause weight gain of 10 pounds in a year!!! Just because it is "only 100 calories" doesn't mean it is calorie free and that it doesn't "count" at all. It counts!

My biggest problem with most 100 calorie packs is that they are very high glycemic and don't fill you up at all. I am actually hungrier after eating some of those!

For 100 calories you can have:
  • 14 gummy bears
  • 7 gumdrops
  • 3 licorice twists
  • 1/3 of most candy bars
  • 11 wheat thin crackers
  • 1/2 snack sized bag of potato or nacho chips
  • 1/3 of large soft pretzel
  • 1/2 chocolate chip cookie
  • 5 malt balls
  • 1/2 cup low fat frozen yogurt
  • 3 T. ice cream
  • 4/5 of peanut butter cup
Have you noticed how small those portion sizes are???

Some of my favorite 100 calorie snacks (more filling and bigger portions):
