Snack Ideas for Office or After School

Tara Gidus, MS, RD, CSSD, LD/N
I am a big believer in "Eat light, Eat often." I limit the size of my meals so that I can spread my calories throughout the day to keep my metabolism as high as possible. I look forward to my next eating "event," so snacks are key to my daily routine.

My rule of thumb with snacks is to stick to about 100-150 calories (200 if you are really active). The snacks should be low in glycemic index, which just means it does not spike and drop your blood sugar quickly but rather gives lasting energy. I look for fiber and/or protein in a snack, although fat also brings the glycemic index down as well.

Some of my favorite snacks:

Fresh fruit. I just discovered a service for offices (or you can use it at home) that delivers fresh fruit right to your door. The Fruit Guys will send a crate of fresh fruit to your home or office. I think this is especially brilliant and a wonderful idea for offices who are looking to improve the health of their employees. Ditch the candy jar and order a fruit crate from The Fruit Guys!!!

Bars: I love all kinds of different bars. There are million out here to choose from, but these are the ones I personally eat because of the nutritional profile and benefits as well as of course: TASTE! Some of my favorites are SOYJOY, Flavor and Fiber Bars from Gnufoods, Kardea Nutrition Bars, Pria bars, Dark Chocolate ZonePerfect bars, and Clif Nectar bars.

Trail Mix: I love trail mix because you can get a variety of different flavors and textures and using nuts and dried fruit give a great nutritional profile. I just found a new trail mix/granola that you can design for yourself. I know you can mix one yourself at home, but I promise you that it won't be easy to match the fun ingredients you can choose in this one. MojaMix is the company and you can go to their website and create your own granola or trail mix. I made one with: granola base, figs, almonds, pecans, blueberries, cherries, sunflower seeds, peaches, persimmons, goldenberries, goji berries, coconut chips, flax seeds, chia seeds, hemp seeds, and pumpkin seeds. And believe it or not I didn't even get everything they offer! You can name your mix (mine was Tara's Tasty Treat) and they mix it fresh and ship it out. Love it!
