Love Trail Mix?

Tara Gidus, MS, RD, CSSD, LD/N

One of my favorite snacks is trail mix with various nuts and dried fruits. Nuts are incredibly healthy, and my favorites are pistachios, walnuts, pecans, and almonds from a taste and nutritional perspective. Dried fruit is sweet and can satisfy that mid-afternoon need for something sweet with a fiber packed, nutrient dense sweet treat.

My problem is that a lot of the trail mixes you purchase have nuts that are not crunchy because they are in with the dried fruit and after a while you get stale nuts. Also, a lot of the dried fruit has sugar and oils added to them. And finally, the packages are WAY TOO BIG and you end up eating WAY TOO MUCH!

Imagine my delight when I discovered a new-to-me line of trail mixes and dried fruit. I LOVE this stuff! It is called Peeled Snacks and they have no added oils and sugars so you are left with the natural nut and dried fruit. And these pieces of dried fruit are so plump and delicious I am salivating writing about it right now!

Yesterday I had the "Figsated" mix which was figs, apricots, dates, almonds, and pistachios. The almonds and pistachios are in their own little bag inside of the bigger bag with the dried fruit. I have never had crunchier nuts than those almonds. Mmmmm! Today I had the "Big Big Cherry" which is bing cherries, apples, peaches, walnuts, and cashews. Again, crunch nuts and plump fruits! They even have a line that has dark chocolate.

Each bag serves 2 at 150 calories with 3 grams fiber, 3 grams protein and 6-7 grams of fat (remember that is all coming naturally from the nuts). You can choose to eat half and save the rest for tomorrow or you can eat the whole bag for 300 calories if you need a longer lasting snack.

Peeled Snacks also has individual bags of dried fruit like mango, banana, pineapple, cherries, apricots, etc. Everything I tried was fresh, plump, and delicious! Let me know what you think!

I've tried the single-serving variety and these are also very delicious - my favorite is the mango. The best part is that there's no sugar added!
