Fiber in the Morning

I just read a press release from Kellogg's announcing that they are going to add fiber to most of it's cereal line. They are committing to adding at least 3 grams of fiber to 80% of the Kellogg cereal line in the US and Canada by the end of 2010. This is BIG NEWS!

One in 10 children and adults get enough fiber. That means 9 out of 10 people don't. Not good stats. Fiber is important for digestive health as well as helping to regulate how quickly blood sugar rises. It may also help with weight loss because it keeps you full for a longer period of time.

I love recommending cereal as a breakfast for adults and children alike. Most cereals are fortified with important vitamins and minerals, and it is a vehicle for milk which increases the nutritional value even more. Kids love cereal, but a lot of them have a lot of sugar and very little, if any fiber.

Now kids will be able to enjoy some of their favorite cereals with added fiber. Kellogg's already has reduced the amount of sugar and sodium in a lot of their cereals, so this is another added benefit.

The company says they will start with Fruit Loops and Apple Jacks and move on to others. Of course, Kellogg's already has numerous high fiber cereals in their AllBran line, Shredded Mini Wheats, and Raisin Bran. I love a good bowl of Raisin Bran and I add AllBran to my yogurt or mix it in with other cereals and my oatmeal quite often.
