Avastin to Treat Gliomas

Cyndy King, PhD, NP, FAAN
Avastin is a cancer drug that has been shown and been approved to treat lung and colorectal cancers. A new study now has shown that Avastin can slow the growth and shrink tumors of a common form of brain cancer called glioma. This is exciting news.

A larger clinical trial has already been started which will involve some 160 patients to find out just how much of an improvement they can have when fighting brain cancer with Avastin and no other drug.

The results of this initial study are very encouraging. We often do not have much new and exciting news to share about brain tumors.

Just wanted to pass on my best wishes. My family just lost our mother to Stage 4 Colorectal; distal to liver and lungs etc... I also wanted to comment on the avastin it is a wonderful drug but unusual for your diagnosis. that being said, good for you. I am not a doctor, just so you know, but half my family members are. In addition, over the last three years I have learned a lot. all the mono-clonal antibody are approved in certain areas but there is an enormous cross over value being under under utilized. There is extensive research explaining, that, while all cancers have individual qualities they also have a distant Cancer Stem Cell progenitor that they share. Make sure you ask your doc about different types combinations and trials. thousands of trials every year and 98% never see them. Also if something is working ask you Doc about rotating and using adjunct therapies like vitamin C to keep your immune system up and stave off drug resistance. Again best wishes. Keep your head up and always fight. Medications are getting better and the Docs here are top notch; but your attitude and willingness to fight back is the intangible with cancer. Nothing is beyond defeat remember that.

My husband has been on Avastin and Carmustine for 6 months. He was diagnosed with a Stage 3 anaplastic astrocytoma. They removed most of the tumor and followed up with radiation and an oral chemotherapy with slight success. The oncologist then switched my husband to Avastin and we have seen remarkable improvement. His tumor is almost completely gone! I don't know if these results are typical, but it has done great things for my husband and other patients we talked to (colon cancer, kidney cancer, breast cancer, brain tumors, etc...)
